Therapy Services of Marlette Regional Hospital (MRH) provides physical, occupational, and speech therapies as well as athletic training and sports medicine. As state-licensed therapy professionals, it is our mission to provide the highest quality, evidence-based, hands-on, one-on-one care to our patients so they can perform functional activities of daily living as well as improve their overall quality of life.

Common Problems Treated

Michigan law requires physical, occupational, and speech therapy treatments be prescribed by a doctor of medicine (MD), doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO), doctor of dental surgery (DDS), doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM), nurse practitioner (NP), or physician assistant (PA). Therapy Services

Aquatic physical therapy is the evidence-based and skilled practice of physical therapy in an aquatic environment by a physical therapist or a physical therapist assistant under the supervision of a physical therapist. Aquatic physical therapy includes but is not limited to treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, health, wellness, and fitness of patient populations in an aquatic environment with or without the use of assistive, adaptive, orthotic, protective, or supportive devices and equipment.

The unique properties of the aquatic environment enhance interventions for patients across the age span with musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular/pulmonary, and integumentary diseases, disorders, or conditions.

Aquatic physical therapy interventions are designed to improve or maintain:

Function.
Aerobic capacity/endurance conditioning.
Balance, coordination, and agility.
Body mechanics and postural stabilization.
Flexibility.
Gait and locomotion.
Muscle strength, power, and endurance interventions used in aquatic physical therapy include, but are not limited to therapeutic exercise, functional training, manual therapy, breathing strategies, electrotherapeutic modalities, physical agents and mechanical modalities using the properties of water and techniques unique to the aquatic environment.

Athletic training is designed to optimize the return and participation of athletes to sporting activities as well as prevention of injury or re-injury. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and intervention of emergency, acute and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations and disabilities.

More specifically, a skilled service is performed by a state licensed professional for the evaluation, education and treatment of:
Sports related orthopedic conditions, such as sprains, strains and fractures
Post surgical intervention of sports related conditions such as ACL, mensical and SLAP repair

According to the American Speech Language Hearing Association, speech therapy is defined as the services provided to people with speech, language, and hearing disorders to help them communicate effectively. Communication includes speech, language, both receptive and expressive language, and non-verbal communication such as facial expression, posture, and gesture. Swallowing problems managed under speech therapy are problems in the oral and pharyngeal stages of swallowing. Speech therapy services typically include but are not limited to:

Examination and evaluation of impairments, functional limitations, disabilities, or changes in speech-language-hearing functions.
Physical strengthening exercises to improve oral motor function.
Instructive or repetitive practice and drilling to improve language understanding and motor function.
Use of audio-visual aids and strategies to facilitate functional communication.
