A select group of medical students have begun their third year of study practicing in Sanilac and Lapeer Counties as a result of a partnership with the Central Michigan University (CMU) College of Medicine. The CMU College of Medicine has a strong desire to provide a sustainable supply of highly-trained physicians to underserved regions of Michigan and the Midwest.
On January 16, McKenzie Health System and Marlette Regional Hospital, as affiliates of United Healthcare Partners, warmly welcomed four CMU medical students to their facilities and communities. These students will work in partnership with clinical physicians and staff as part of a six-month program called the Comprehensive Community Clerkship (CCC) that aims to expand upon their previous two years of classroom studies. McKenzie Health System and Marlette Regional Hospital are two of many CCC sites in the state working in partnership with the CMU College of Medicine.
At McKenzie Health System, Neilesh Parikh (left) of Ann Arbor, MI and Soham Parikh (right) of Canton, MI will work in partnership with Dr. Matthew Gormley in Croswell serving patients’ family health care needs. Neilesh completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan and earned a degree in general biology. His interests include: playing bridge, swimming, basketball, and meditation. Soham completed his undergraduate studies at Michigan State University and earned a degree in human biology. His interests include: traveling, rugby, adventure sports, and watching movies.
“Hands-on training is vital to the development of well-trained medical professionals,” said Steve Barnett, President and CEO of McKenzie Health System. “We look forward to these bright, dedicated, and talented individuals working with us over the next 6 months. Participation in the CCC benefits not only the interns, but McKenzie Health System and the local economy as well.”
At Marlette Regional Hospital, Seth Coombs (left) of Okemos, MI and Nicholas Cozzi (right) of Chicago, IL will work in partnership with Dr. William Starbird in North Branch and Dr. Jabir Akhtar in Marlette, respectively, serving patients’ family health care needs. Seth completed his undergraduate studies at Western Michigan University and earned a degree in aviation science and administration. His interests include: coffee, puzzles, and Ultimate Frisbee. Nicholas completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and earned a degree in neuroscience. His interests include coaching little-league baseball.

We consider our experiences with these medical students as an investment in future healthcare providers.
