Free Teen Heart Health Checks Offered in April at Marlette Regional Hospital

In partnership with the Thomas Smith Memorial Foundation, Marlette Regional Hospital, as an affiliate of United Healthcare Partners, is offering Teen Heart Health Checks to students ages 13 to 19 FREE OF CHARGE every weekday throughout the month of April 2017. The screenings will be performed by Marlette Regional Hospital’s cardiopulmonary team by appointment at Marlette Regional Hospital, 2770 Main Street, Marlette, MI 48453.
This special program developed by Hurley Children’s Hospital offers an in-depth, noninvasive heart screening that includes a medical history, blood pressure check, and an electrocardiogram (EKG). An echocardiogram (ECHO) screening, a noninvasive picture of the heart, may also be performed if needed. The screening looks for evidence of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a serious condition that can cause sudden cardiac death in young athletes as well as in students engaging in physical activity or exercise.
Teens must schedule an appointment to participate by calling 989-635-4360. Teens participating in the screening event will need to have their parents complete a registration packet that can be downloaded from www.TommysHeart.org. The registration packet will also be available on the day of their appointment.
These free Teen Heart Health Checks are made possible in part by the Thomas Smith Memorial Foundation, created in memory of Thomas N. Smith, 17, a Flushing High School senior, who passed away in 2011 from an undiagnosed, enlarged heart.
